True Grit

Sparkles is making headway. She found an innovative sleeping position to be able to breathe more easily and has eaten and slept her way through the worst.
I am going to need Hubby to collaborate on getting a few more glamorous pictures of his favorite little Princess. She is an active two-hands-full now, when awake.
I have been reaching out to more knowledgeable kitten-folks for advice and their support has been invaluable. If all goes as planned, they are going to take her in a few days and integrate her into a new kitten-family of five foundlings about the same age. They were collected from the local pound yesterday "pre-euthanasia".
Hubby had taken for granted that we were keeping Sparkles. I may have to draw him a picture, 'cos he sure hasn't been listening to the words I've used. No more "permanents" hung on my heart strings for a while, if ever. Rescue, strengthen and launch on their way, then help the next one.

  1. But one little kitty takes up no room at all and can tug at the heartstrings every day, keeping hubby happy! If she has won his heart...gee....can you really give her up forever. (But I do think a foster cat family would be good for her...for now...then you can take her back....) I am a sucker for cats. One is on my lap right now...

  2. Jean, We are away all day. We live in a place where coyotes roam and I weigh the responsibility of two decades of care. I am not saying it wouldn't please me, but it would be a selfish act. If I adopt another cat, it will be a mature animal that really needs a home. This kitten is marketable to many people and should have the best future she can have. I am concerned that her one eye is not going to recover fully. If she is rejected because of that, I'll take her.

  3. Go Sparkles !

Hopefully may yet open ? Or do you fear it was damaged at some point in her hard beginnings... well, good luck to her whatever you finally choose. She looks like a little sweetheart though, hope she'll find a good home...

  6. Like the others I'm going awww, but then I'm a sucker for anything helpless and in need of tender loving care.
Cats are a tough breed, not for nothing are they said to have nine lives.
I trust you to find the best possible home for Sparkle.

    Keep us posted, please.

  7. That's such good news! She really is fighting hard and you're doing a marvellous job . With any luck , her eye might just need a bit more time and a few more days of antibiotics.
I must admit , when I saw the first photo of her with your husband , I did wonder how you were going to prise her off him !

  8. ER, your pragmatism/realism is exactly right. Bravo for what you're doing right now, and for handing her over to someone else.

  9. I feel as though I have a team of cheer-leaders, thanks all. Little Madam demanded two feeds during the night. I'm the one going downhill, not her. Did I ever mention I don't like puppies, kittens or tiny baby humans? I prefer them once their personality is established. My friend's kid, who found Sparkles was offered to me to hold shortly after his birth, as if this was a huge favor. I said "No Thank You" at the time and have remained friends with his mother anyway.

  10. A picture might work, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

I like your approach of catch, nurse, and launch very much. So mature and level-headed. Best of luck with that!

  11. The one eye doesn't look good yet does it, and whoever does take Sparkles will be spending time and money at the vets office. Such a sweet little cutie though.

  12. Ms Pliers, It's all easier in theory than in practice:)

TechnoBabe, the eye is open and no longer red and irritated. For now it is one blue eye. We'll see. The resilience of this kitten is incredible.

  13. Yay Sparkles! So pleased to see more pics of the lil one, and to hear she's doing so well. I share your views about human babies - it's one of the reasons I chose to adopt rather than have my own, so imagine my surprise when we were given a newborn! - She grew on me, of course.

  14. What a little doll. My own heartstrings say "keep her keep her," and I think it is wonderful that you will if her eye is a problem, but I also understand why you are willing to let her go to a future forever home so that you can help others. (If she ultimately winds up living with you will she will never meet a coyote if she remains indoors!)

p.s. Pilgrim continues to regain his health daily...is still at the vet clinic and we will bring him home on Saturday morning. :)
