If I were ever inspired to dress as a hounds-tooth tweed covered, cat-suited space-alien, I now know where to shop!
Images of live action faces were projected onto the mannequins. We all stopped to see if they were real breathing people. They were not, but they slyly smiled and made eye contact. At first it was intriguing, then it was a distracting gimmick.
Etc...

I just don't understand much of women's fashions these days.
ReplyDeleteI don't pretend to know what fashion is, but I love that final shot. Now that is cool.
ReplyDeleteThose mannequins are something nightmares are made of.
ReplyDeleteStephen, but Gaultier has a tartan skort for men, a la Braveheart. You mean you don't have one in your wardrobe?
ReplyDeleteMartin, I like to see the social connections and influences of these shows. There were some films of his collections for Hermes. That impressed me most. The fact that classical Hermes were brave enough to bring this guy on board and the work he did within their rich quality parameters, that did carry his signature personality.
I also liked the last shot. I left it without comment so it can speak volumes, or not.
Birdie, they were freaky and a distraction. The whole show screamed "look at me!" a child being naughty to get attention.
ReplyDeleteOh Lord ! Where is Jean Muir when you need her ?
ReplyDeleteHaute couture and practical fashion are too often worlds apart. Most of the time I can't figure out the appeal of the former.
ReplyDeleteI suppose the elite want a unique look, but sometimes it's just plain ridiculous.
S&S, I wonder if this guy grew up using Jean Muir patterns?
ReplyDeleteJean, Overall, I didn't see the originality I expected. Sometimes The Emperor really isn't wearing any new clothes:)
I know it's kind of a self-aware exhibit, but I think I would have liked to see it. I do like looking at fashion, obnoxious as it is.
ReplyDeleteRather eerie!
ReplyDeletesort of like 3-D movies then. Initially you go "wow, special effects" and then half way through your first one you find yourself shaking a fist at the screen and yelling "All the 3-D in the world cannot replace decent plot James flipping Cameron!!"
ReplyDeleteKerry, Being married to an Artist, I long ago realized that art and narcissism are closely related. I don't regret going to the show at all and I spent quite a time rooted to the spot, observing it all. Fashion is an extension of our cultures, even if we don't wear it ourselves.
ReplyDeleteLydia, it was, indeed.
Pixie, Exactly right. Of course there were some beautiful and/or extraordinary elements, but overall, the exhibit exposed his weaknesses more than his strengths. Curator Ego got in the way, maybe.
utterly amazing!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting and probably a fun exhibition. I think the mannequins looking at me would sort of freak me out a little though.
ReplyDeleteYoung, not as amazing as I expected?
ReplyDeleteGrey Horse, Too deliberate for me.
M. Gaultier is, I think, ever so slightly mad, but always worth a look. I think the mannequins sound creeeepy. I like to think that out there somewhere there are tweet-wearing aliens.
ReplyDeleteArgent, I agree with every word you wrote.
ReplyDeleteYou are married to an artist! Good god. So is my husband.
ReplyDeleteI am so not a fashion type, as I sit in my gym shorts and t-shirt, wondering if I can get away with a run to the wine store without putting on real clothes. But, I do think it would be most fun to see a fashion show like this. Although, I would either have nightmares from the mannequins or write a truly gruesome story.
ReplyDeleteKerry, Art is laudable. I'm sure I was looking for a spontaneity and insouciance that was lacking in my own make-up, when I took the plunge. Be careful what you ask for was never so true:)
ReplyDeleteMJ, I brush my hair before i leave home in the morning and that's about it. I walked the dog later than usual today (in full daylight) and hesitated about my attire. I upgraded to include a bra and off we went.
Just because I won't be wearing it doesn't mean it's not worth looking at.
I would have LOVED seeing that!
