The Survivor Tree
Once you get past the advertising, there's a great story here.
Hello: What an amazing story of survival. The tenacity for life which growing things show is truly inspirational, this is such a wonderful story of hope and the ability to overcome evil.
This is just a small snippet of the story. I've been watching some documentaries, in which Spielberg and DreamWorks had a hand, one man, who was there ten years ago when the tree was discovered, worked clearing the rubble. He is a City worker and has followed and helped nurture this tree from the beginning. He knows that his health has been seriously damaged by his exposure to all of the dust but made the return of this symbolic tree his mission in life.
Had no advertising, and am just amazed that anything could have survived under the rubble, you'd think it would have been shredded and ground to sawdust in such a calamity. And can't believe either that it has been ten years.
Jean, I'm amazed this story hasn't crossed my path until now. It has all the makings of a legend. TechnoBabe, from what I've seen, they're doing a great job restoring a living memorial of hundreds of trees to ground zero. Duta, I would make the trip just to see this tree. Deborah, I know just what you mean. Owen, a decade much too quickly gone, and what to show for it? Just keep doing what we can, where we are, with what we have. Did you see that the tree had its own flag at the nursery?
Thank you for this. How very special. Tomorrow I will go give my pear tree in the front yard some extra special attention in honor of the Survivor Tree.
We are in for some heart-tugging, heart-warming stories in the days leading up to the tenth anniversary of 9-11. This is one of the best.
Pixie, The ad must be different each time. It's worth googling Survivor Pear tree, ground zero, to read about this living thing found, broken under the rubble, nursed back to health and returned to the memorial park beneath the new towers.
Lydia, I always come away with the knowledge that good people far outnumber the bad.
Wow what a story, new to me, and what perfect timing. I think it's pretty neat how they planted a little orchard there; I hope they're all as tough as this little tree.
I didn't know about this tree either. Someone really had a green thumb in order to get it to suvive both times.
I can across something the other day on horses that was fasinating in an unusual odd, very odd way. I saved it for you and now I can't find the notepad... when I do I'll just toss it over.
If I were a tree, I would be a London Plane. I am gregarious but enjoy solitude. I am English in my heart and soul, but still have room for other nations. I have lived in six countries and picked up a French husband along the way. We have a wonderful, kind, strong-minded daughter who has become a "Human of whom to be proud". I am a magnet for the lost. I foster collies (and collie cousins and the occasional, accidental, cat or crow). Those I have saved have saved me in return. I notice the world around me and often talk to strangers. Traveling alone is interesting, liberating and fulfilling. I am good at most things that I undertake but have few formal qualifications. I am able to have and treasure friends with whom I disagree about almost everything. My life is not over. Who knows where I am headed?
A ponyism is one of Life's Truths perceived from the perspective of an Effing Pony: - Life's a Bluff! - Those who aspire to make their mark on this world must expect to scrape some skin on the walls of experience. - The greatest value of money is as the currency of Hope.
- To be an Ass or an Asset, that is the question?
-Selective memory is but the first step on the path to magical thinking.
-Not all Baggage comes with wheels. -When your hero is a horse you are less likely to be disappointed than were he a human.
-Unfortunately, great wealth does not always equate with class.
-A dick, surrounded by puppies, remains a dick. -What better antidote to evil than kittens? -Any time you have something heavy, ready to drop, your cat will sit right below and look up at you.

Yowsa! I had my volume turned up and jumped out of my skin when the commercial went on. I can't say you didn't warn me. meh
ReplyDeleteI did love the story though. Living things fight to live. We want to live. Be is a tree, a dog, a crow or a person. The will to survive is amazing.
